Successfully complete the game on the "Hard-Boiled" difficulty setting to unlock Dead On Arrival mode. Successfully complete the game on the "Detective" difficulty setting to unlock the Hard Boiled, New York Minute, and Dead Man Walking modes. Successfully complete the game in Dead On Arrival mode to view a special ending. Start the game, then press or to cycle character models until reaching one of Mona Sax as she appeared when in the shower. If you make it far enough into the room above, when you regain control of Max you can engage bullet time and shoot the gangsters that have by now come up the stairs.Start the game with the " -developerkeys" command line parameter. The thugs will be well up the stairs and pretty much into the room by the time the cutscene ends, and if they had a clear shot at you on the way up they will kill you before the cutscene ends and you are handed back control of Max.
If you get stuck or do not go far enough, you will get shot. You have about 3 seconds to turn back up the stairs and run up and to the right, and (and this is important) well into the room above (the room you were in before you went down the stairs). This is very uncomfortable because you have played the game until now from a first person viewpoint. Moving the mouse left and right turns you, and pressing W will walk you forward. Immediately as the cutscene starts, you are still in control of Max, but it's from a weird third person viewpoint. as you walk down the stairs (past the immobilised boss) a cutscene will start where the boss orders his thugs to kill you.
Just to try to make these instructions more clear. An update from 2020 playing this game, your mileage may vary.
